Halloween is only a few days away and kids and adults alike are getting ready for the festivities. In fact, you may have been to a Halloween party already! Halloween festivities can be a lot of fun, but the holiday also presents a number of risks. Unfortunately, car accidents involving intoxicated drivers increase on Halloween night, and many of the victims are pedestrians who are out trick-or-treating. We at Justice Injury Law care about your safety and the safety of your children, which is why we’ve put together this list of tips to help you avoid having your Halloween ruined by an unexpected injury.
Consider this list of tips to help keep your family safe this Halloween:
- Choose your trick-or-treating locations wisely. Stick to neighborhoods that you are familiar with, and always chaperone young trick-or-treaters. Instruct your kids never to enter a stranger’s home or enter a stranger’s vehicle.
- If your kids are old enough to trick-or-treat on their own, make sure that they still know to stick together with their friends in groups and to call home to check in.
- Help your child choose a well-fitting costume without loose material that may present a tripping hazard. Exercise good judgment when it comes to costumes with masks or props, as masks can decrease visibility and props can cause injury if young children aren’t supervised.
- Increase your child’s visibility at night by adding reflective tape or glow sticks to their costume and treat bags. It is also a good idea to carry a flashlight.
- Teach your kids proper pedestrian conduct, including waiting for signals, crossing the street at crosswalks, and looking both ways before entering the street. Teach them also to never assume that a driver will see them and stop for them and to always yield the right of way
- Be careful on other people’s property. Instruct your children not to run on front lawns or approach an unfamiliar dog that may be out in the yard. Not only is it the right thing to do to respect a person’s property, but it can also keep your child from sustaining a trip and fall injury or a dog bite injury.
- If a house is unlit and does not look welcoming, skip it and move on to the next house.
We hope that you and your family enjoy a safe and happy Halloween!
